The FDA Food Code is a model code—not a blanket product approval. Ask which complete system, thickness, details, substrate, texture, cleaners, temperatures, traffic, and cure conditions apply, then coordinate the finish with the project team and local authority having jurisdiction.

Most difficult coating failures and maintenance problems begin below the finish or at an edge, drain, joint, threshold, or temperature transition. Put these conditions in the scope before approving color.

Drains, Slope & Standing Water

What is the best floor coating for a grocery or convenience store?

There is no universal best store coating. Dry aisles, entries, beverage stations, deli, bakery, meat, seafood, coolers, restrooms, stockrooms, and receiving can need different preparations, builds, textures, details, and finishes. Start with each zone's traffic, exposure, cleaning, temperature, concrete, appearance, and closure window.

Is epoxy suitable for every area of a supermarket?

No. A high-build epoxy assembly with a compatible topcoat can fit many dry-to-moderate interior zones. Hot, wet, cold, thermal-cycling, severely impacted, fuel-exposed, or exterior areas may require urethane cement, rapid-cure chemistry, repair mortar, a traffic system, or another engineered assembly.

When should urethane cement be evaluated?

Urethane cement is commonly evaluated in deli, bakery, prepared-food, meat, seafood, washdown, hot-water, and thermal-cycling zones. The decision depends on temperature, moisture, food and chemical exposure, impact, substrate, cleaning, thickness, texture, drains, coves, and current manufacturer documentation.

Can floor coatings be installed inside operating coolers or freezers?

Only a product and process qualified for the actual substrate, installation temperature, service temperature, condensation, dew point, ventilation, and cure schedule should be considered. Food or inventory may need removal and refrigeration may need to change or stop. Standard epoxy should not be assumed to fit cold service.

Can Astro phase installation while the store remains open?

Many projects can be divided into work zones, but the store must approve routes, exits, deliveries, food and inventory controls, dust and odor isolation, ventilation, utilities, fixture movement, cure protection, cleaning, inspection, and restocking. Some conditions may require a department or wider area to close.

How soon can shoppers, carts, stocking, cleaning, and full service return?

Return to service is a sequence, not one time. Staff foot traffic, shopper access, carts, pallet jacks, equipment, wet cleaning, chemical contact, food service, cold service, and full operations may have different milestones. Use the selected system's written schedule under actual site conditions.

Can coatings be installed over VCT, tile, adhesive, or an existing coating?

Sometimes a sound, compatible surface can be incorporated, but removal is often needed to expose the substrate and address moisture, contamination, loose tile, weak grout, adhesive, height, or detailing. Test and inspect before deciding. Suspect legacy flooring or mastic should be assessed before disturbance.

Can a grocery-store floor be made less slippery?

Texture can be adjusted for expected wet or contaminated conditions, but no floor is slip-proof. More aggregate may improve traction conditions while also increasing cleaning effort and affecting carts or small wheels. Review liquids, grease, slope, drains, footwear, wheel traffic, cleaning, and wear together.

Are seamless floors easier to clean?

A fluid-applied system can create a continuous field with fewer grout lines or surface seams, which may simplify routine cleaning. Joints, cracks, drains, penetrations, thresholds, cooler panels, coves, and equipment edges still need intentional details. A seamless appearance does not sterilize a room or replace cleaning.

Can the floor handle shopping carts, pallet jacks, and receiving traffic?

The assembly can be selected around documented wheel types, loads, frequency, turns, impacts, routes, equipment loads, and concrete condition. Customer aisles and receiving lanes may need different thicknesses, aggregates, repairs, joint treatments, or topcoats. No coating is impact-proof or maintenance-free.

Will a coating resist food spills, cleaners, degreasers, and sanitizers?

Chemical resistance is product- and exposure-specific. Provide the exact product or SDS, concentration, temperature, frequency, dwell time, rinse process, and cleanup delay. Astro can compare those conditions with current documentation for the complete proposed assembly. Resistant does not mean chemical-proof.

Will a coating fix low spots or poor drainage?

No finish coat should be expected to create proper drainage by itself. Low areas, incorrect slope, drain elevation, ponding, cracks, and damaged concrete may require separate correction before the floor assembly. Waterproofing, if required, is also a separate specified function.

When are drains and integral coves part of the scope?

Drains and coves are commonly considered in wet, flushed, food-prep, janitorial, restroom, and specification-driven zones. Details depend on the process, cleaning, wall construction, drain type, slope, equipment, local requirements, and project documents. Coordinate the final assembly with the project team and authority having jurisdiction.

Can the floor use brand colors, logos, or wayfinding?

Yes. Solid colors, flake or quartz blends, borders, logos, queue cues, department zoning, and traffic markings can be explored. Approvals should identify color, aggregate, texture, sheen, scale, lighting, and acceptable variation while keeping the visuals compatible with traffic and cleaning.
