Why Houston garages need a different system

Hot Tire Pickup Resistance

Houston summers push tire temperatures well above the threshold that causes ordinary epoxy to delaminate. Our 100% solids systems are specifically rated to resist hot tire pickup — the most common failure mode on cheap garage coatings.

Humidity-Rated Installation

Houston's humidity requires surface moisture testing before every installation. We test every slab before opening a bucket. Coatings applied over unchecked moisture vapor will fail — and we won't let that happen.

Expansion & Contraction

Extreme heat cycles cause concrete to expand and contract significantly. Our system formulations include flexibility components that move with the slab — preventing the surface cracking that affects rigid low-solids systems.

— Reviews

Over 100 five-star garage transformations in Houston

"I've been embarrassed to open my garage door for years. Now I leave it open on purpose. The metallic floor looks like something out of a car magazine. Astro Epoxy finished it in one day."

James R. — Katy, TX

Metallic Pigment System

"We had three quotes. Astro Epoxy was the only contractor who talked about hot tire resistance and actually tested our slab for moisture before starting. That told me everything I needed to know."

Sandra M. — Sugar Land, TX

Silver Bells Flake System

"My wife thought I was crazy spending money on the garage floor. She now tells everyone about it. The Greystone flake system looks incredible and it's been two years with zero issues."

— The Process

Precision from prep to final walkthrough

  1. Step 1

    Surface Prep & Moisture Test

Diamond grinding or shot blasting opens the concrete surface for maximum bond. Moisture vapor emission testing confirms the slab is ready.

  2. Step 2

    Crack Repair & Patching

All cracks, spalls, and surface defects are repaired with compatible patching compounds before any coating is applied.

  3. Step 3

    Base Coat Application

100% solids epoxy primer and base coat applied to the prepared slab. No water-based products. No shortcuts.

  4. Step 4

    Flake Broadcast or Pigment Application

Polymer flakes are broadcast to full rejection, or metallic pigments are worked into the wet coat to create the decorative effect.

  5. Step 5

    Topcoat & Final Walkthrough

UV-stable polyaspartic or polyurethane topcoat seals the system. We walk through the finished floor with you before we pack up.

— FAQ

Garage floor questions, answered

Will epoxy hold up to hot tire pickup in Houston?+

Yes — if the right system is used. 100% solids polyaspartic and polyurethane topcoats are specifically rated for hot tire resistance. Water-based systems and thin-film products are not. Every Astro Epoxy installation uses a topcoat rated for hot tire pickup.

How long before I can park on my new garage floor?+

Most systems are ready for foot traffic within 24 hours and vehicle traffic within 48–72 hours. Polyaspartic topcoat systems cure faster than standard epoxy and are often ready for vehicles the same day.

How does Houston humidity affect the installation?+

Humidity affects epoxy adhesion significantly. We test every slab for moisture vapor emission before application. If moisture levels are too high, we treat the slab before proceeding. This is a non-negotiable step that some contractors skip — it's why their floors fail.

Is the floor slip resistant?+

Yes. Anti-slip additives are included in the topcoat as standard. Flake systems also provide texture that improves traction. If you need a specific slip resistance rating for a commercial application, ask us and we will specify accordingly.

What's the odor like during installation?+

100% solids systems have significantly lower VOC content than solvent-based products. Most installations produce a mild chemical odor during application that dissipates within a few hours. We recommend keeping the garage ventilated during and immediately after installation.

How do I maintain an epoxy garage floor?+

Routine maintenance is simple — sweep or dust mop regularly, mop with a pH-neutral cleaner for deeper cleaning. Avoid harsh acidic cleaners. Most Astro Epoxy floors look as good after 5 years as the day they were installed with basic care.

Can you coat a floor with existing cracks or damage?+

Yes. Minor cracks and surface damage are repaired as part of our standard installation process. Severe structural cracking or heaving may require concrete repair before coating. We assess every floor during the estimate and are upfront about what we find.

What systems do you offer and what's the difference?+

We install three primary systems — metallic pigment (decorative art floor), polymer flake (most popular, maximum durability), and resin quartz (commercial-grade chemical resistance). Each uses 100% solids industrial base coats. The difference is the decorative layer and topcoat system. Visit our Colors page to explore all options.
